TWHS Reviews Anastasia Holiday Kits

We interrupt our regularly-scheduled Frankenstorm warnings for a diversion of vanity...

Seeing that Hurricane Sandy has officially canceled Halloween along the East Coast, might I entice you with some holiday glam?  Anastasia Beverly Hills - the definitive eye and brow expert for celebrities - shipped me makeup kits for review that will put ooh-la-la in your fa-la-la!

Just in time for festive parties, the Want You to Want Me Makeup kit and Kisses on My List (Volume 2) Lip Gloss Set are both chocked with shimmer and shine.

The makeup kit - a retro-glam homage to the 70s - is a kit within a clutch! The kit contains:
- Crease-free, smooth matte and hydrating Illumin8 shimmer shades of Power Ballad, Jellies, Platform Wedge, and Ziggy
- High-pigment shadows that can be worn dry for a sheer wash of color, or wet to transform shadow into liner or for a bold metallic finish
- Dual-sided eye shadow brush
- Jet black liquid eye liner (the must-have for holiday cat eyes!)
- Mini Clear Brow Gel sets brows
MSRP $34.00

The lip gloss kit contains tubes of (shown left to right below) Moi, Sharona, Roxanne, Jolene, Maggie May and Lola - all namesakes of muses from the 70s.  They are all nice, neutral contrasts to any vibrant colors you'll wear for the holidays, and the ultra-hydrating formula of the glosses is clinically proven to improve the texture of the lips.  As stated in a previous review of her lip gloss, Anastasia packages her gloss tubes with silicone applicators instead of the standard sponges, which helps control the perfect amount of color.

Of the colors, my personal fave is Lola; a sassy pink hue with just the right touch of glitter. Can you say meet me under the mistletoe?
MSRP $30.00

These kits are ideal hostess gifts, especially for the fashionista throwing a disco trim-a-tree party.  Check out tips on getting the 70s glam look from behind the scenes of the photo shoot.  Disco ball not included.

Petition For Domestic Violence Awareness Within The NFL

On any given Sunday, Monday or Thursday, NFL fans are glued to their TVs and mobile devices in dedicated support of their favorite team. And although the sport is a testosterone-driven machine, players throughout the league this month have been accenting their uniforms with pink gloves, towels and cleats in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Most of the athletes are personally affected by breast cancer. The pink apparel is a powerful way to get support, but it makes domestic violence the underdog when it comes to creating awareness to an audience of millions tuning in.

While lives are traumatically affected by the wrath of breast cancer, domestic violence destroys families and even careers, as wide receiver Chad Johnson's short-lived signing with the Miami Dolphins ended with him head-butting his bride Evelyn Johnson. But the latest devastation involving murders of innocent co-workers in the Wisconsin mass shooting proves that any of us can be affected.

Nicole Lofton is throwing a Hail Mary pass to the NFL by creating a petition to get them to add the color purple for Domestic Violence awareness in October. As it stands, her Change.org petition needs 1,955 signatures, so please add your voice today by clicking here.

TWHS Reviews SheaMoisture Lemongrass & Ginger Dead Sea Salt Soak

Short of chasing my dreams in high heels, the closest I have come to muscle strain lately is rounding up the bounty of leaves in my yard. But along came the experience of nursing my husband with the flu, and the jar of Lemongrass and Ginger Dead Sea Salt Soak sent to me for review by SheaMoisture sounded like the ideal way to soothe him.

Can we say lemon meringue pie?!  The scent of lemon makes me long for the dessert I never got around to savoring this summer.  The texture of the bath salts are as fine as any pristine beach sand you've frolicked in. And with him being bedridden state, I was looking for all ways to comfort him.

Unfortunately, this is where the experience dissolves right into the rush of the bath water.  The scent disappears quickly, so I infused his bathtime by rubbing him down with their previously-reviewed  Lemongrass and Tea Tree Body Scrub w/Orange Peel.  He said that he felt better mostly because I catered to him; not so much the salt soak; awww

The benefits of the lemongrass in the bath salts is that it acts as a natural astringent and anti-inflammatory to help balance skin. The Ginger helps to relieve muscular cramps, spasms, aches and eases stiffness in joints.

In conclusion, the salt soak is best for an in-home spa experience when paired with the body scrub.
Available at Target and Walgreen locations nationwide, the body scrub/bath salts make the perfect one-two punch for a hostess gift this holiday season.

TWHS Reviews The Little Black Dress

Ask any woman about the LBD hanging in her closet, and she will be able to quickly tell you its style, the event(s) she wore it to and the way it makes her feel.

There is a book titled The Little Black Dress that captures all of that and more; it details the inspirational journey of a young woman's path from hopelessness to healing.  A compact read that can be completed in one afternoon (with a big impact ending) it is perfect for any woman - from tweens to elders -  as the ideal holiday gift.   If you happen to be a member of a woman's book club,  support group or afternoon tea, it is a must-read!

Written by Amanda Graybill, the fictional novel is the basis of her service organization Little Black Dress Society, which she based on her personal experience with abuse to give hope to women who are suffering in silence.

The acronym LBD also stands for the organization's mantra Love, Believe, Dream,  and the mission is to raise funds and awareness to end domestic violence.  Through her cause, Graybill hopes to remove the blindfold that hides the shame of abuse.

They say big things come in small packages, and I thoroughly enjoyed the message contained in this jewel of a book.   Much like an LBD, every woman should invest in one.

TWHS Reviews LAMO Sheepskin Booties

LAMO (pronounced Lah-Mow) Sheepskin Footwear brings comfort to crisp weather. The company, which touts itself as a continuous user of natural sheepskin fiber instead of lower quality synthetics, has launched a new fall collection.

From slippers, boots, moccasins, slippers and clogs, you're bound to find a style for the man or woman on your gift list.  Their Classic Collection ranges from $60.00 to  $150.00, and the Signature Collection ranges from $110.00 to $200.00.

The gracious folks there shipped me a pair of Australian Booties for review. Available in chocolate, burgundy, chestnut or pink, the booties are simply heaven for a cold-footed anemic like me!   With a lining of the plushest genuine sheepskin my soles have ever rested in, it makes the booties second to my husband's foot rub for putting me in foot heaven.

And because ankles need love too, the sheepskin trim is as warm as they are fuzzy, stting atop the suede uppers.

Cooler nights will be spent in comfort wearing these LAMO booties, especially right before my husband's famous foot rubs.  Ahhh....

Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

Every nine seconds, a woman is abused physically, sexually, emotionally, economically or psychologically. This past weekend, 18-year-old college freshman Alexandra Kogut was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, who left her dead in her dorm room at SUNY Brockport.

Unspeakable tragedy that is a daily, horrific occurrence for women in every tax bracket, ethnicity, educational level and state. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it is a cause that I will be addressing each week, in a month that is inundated with other causes.

Why? Because most women who suffer do so in silence, thinking that there is no way to end it. I saw it in my family, as a cousin was beaten in broad daylight by her handsome quarterback boyfriend. I saw it in the workplace, as a coworker's threatening husband had our office under police surveillance for an entire week.  In both incidents, the women refused to press charges and stayed with their abusers.

But more importantly, I saw the warning signs BEFORE it happened in my own life, when the words and actions of a boyfriend were so unsettling to my spirit that I knew - I just knew - love had nothing to do with it.

My book How To Stylishly Fall From Grace details the fictional memoir of a fairy tale gone horribly wrong. The main character has to make a choice between staying in her circumstance, complete with a coveted NYC position within the fashion industry (not to mention a shiny new apartment with deck, dishwasher AND in-unit washer/dryer), or barely surviving in a sleepy city obsessed with naps.  The choice can be life-changing, especially when the allure of a lifestyle can mean the difference between losing everything (and someone) you think is important.

I just wish I had been able to give Alexandra a copy of my book.  A compact novella, 184 pages that she could have read in a weekend, like this past weekend...

Truly 9.6 ounces of prevention that would have been worth a pound of cure.

Footnote: The men of SUNY Brockport donned red heels for the event Walk A Mile In Her Shoes today.  Although it was scheduled before Alexandra's death, it now has somber meaning to our local community and the university.
